A fantabulous song from a movie, which had all the songs as super-duper hits of that era. In fact, other songs in this movie easily eclipsed today’s song, I feel 😦
And that’s why I chose it for our Quiz today.
Have a nice day ahead.

Ok, today also I think I have found it using the random search facility in my mind(not the brute-force search – which I am not in a position to do these days due to workload)
The first song to strike me while reading the carnatic-song description of Rex was indraikku Enindha annandhame, which also fits with “overshadowed by other songs in the movie” clue. But then, there is no proposal scene to Revathi in the movie(R Sundararajan wanted us to believe that the hero – a dummy piece, at that – would opt for Kokila over Revathy). Even if the latter were in widowed white robes, I decry that as a logical error in the movie – and I am sure Revathy fan Rex Arul will approve 😉
But I digress.
I tried to rack my brain if, by chance, I missed any such scene in Vaidhehi, but recalling the climax, I think Vaidehi is ruled out.
P.S: after I found the answer(I think what I have thought of is the right answer), I realised that that last sentence of mine is ironic 🙂

Next in line was Anandam Pongida Pongida from Sirai something – google told me it was Siraiparavai – and I tried in vain to find the lyricist of this movie’s songs. It was after a bit of effort that I realised that this movie wont fit “all songs superhit” category – although you never know with Rex, and the usage of the word superhit 😉
Anyway, I had to sort of rule out this but kept it pending because the lyricists werent clear.

This is where serendipity happened. Been lucky with it in the last few posts, and this time it happened as a search for siraiparavai lyrics landed me in page with a link to Pagal Nilavu, and a photo of Murali in the movie.
This led me in the direction of Pagal Nilavu and I recalled Vaidehi Raman in a flash. Vague memories of Sarathbabu proposing to Radhika with the salangai-tying act followed. The storyline ties up, too, with Radhika taking up dance after a long time in the movie’s storyline. In the excitement of being proposed to, she apparently forgot the promise she made to the God of Dance after Kizhakke Pogum Rail. When Lord Shiva had threatened to open his third eye seeing her Manjolai kiLi dhAnO, she had promised not to attempt bharathanatyam again. This is the vow that she broke now, and this directly resulted in Sarathbabu being smashed to pieces by a furious lord in the next scene, sandwiched between lorries!
Anyway, the next step was to confirm that Amar was the lyricist, and this is where there was a twist in the tale:
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?hl=en-IN&q=cache:Uyr7k8LSm0sJ:http://tamillyrics.hosuronline.com/SubCatList.asp%3FscID%3D827%2BPagal+nilavu+lyricist&gbv=2&ct=clnk
This site informed me that all songs in pagal nilavu were by Vairamuthu, which poured cold water on my enthusiasm that I had found the answer.
But that’s where, the great @r_inba came to my rescue. He has been taking a phenomenal effort to highlight Gangai’s lyrical efforts in ilayaraja.forumms.net, and I remembered his warning about 90% of Gangai songs have been attributed to others in internet. And thinking about it, the lyrics of Pagal Nilavu are distinctly un-diamandu.
This led to me a fresh search, and this time I landed up in Raaga, which informed me safely that Gangai was indeed the writer of all songs in Pagal Nilavu
This time, I am convinced of it, and am going to announce Vaidhei Raman as the winner.
And that’s why I was wrong in the last comment about Vaidehi being ruled out!

Then I decided to do a quick brute force search in thiraipaadal – and filter out movies with semi-classical songs.
And that’s when fate saved me time as Murali’s face made itself visible in one of the pages I had visited in my search for siraiparavai lyrics.
From there to Poomalaiye Thol Sera to Vaidehi Raman was but a flash. I vaguely remember Sarathbabu tying the salangai to Radhika, who then breaks her promise to the God of Dance which she made after Kizhakke Pogum Rayil’s mAnjolai kiLi dhAnO – that she’ll never attempt Bharathanatyam again – and goes on to attempt yet another massacre of the great dance form of India.
Almost convinced that it is Vaidehi Raman, I attempted to find the lyricists which gave me a jerk:
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?hl=en-IN&q=cache:Uyr7k8LSm0sJ:http://tamillyrics.hosuronline.com/SubCatList.asp%3FscID%3D827%2BPagal+nilavu+lyricist&gbv=2&ct=clnk
This site said all songs of Pagal Nilavu were by Vairamuthu, which poured cold water on my efforts.
Then, I felt a little uneasy about this. Surely, none of the songs of Pagal Nilavu reek of Diamandu-ness? I couldnt associate the lyrics with him at all and did a search again. I remembered our @r_inba’s phenomenal efforts on highlighting Gangai Amaran’s lyrics, wherein he found that most of his songs are attributed to others over internet.
This time it took me to Raaga and Raaga plesed me by saying all songs for Pagal Nilavu are by Gangai Amaran
This time, I am convinced that Vaidehi Raman is the answerand that’s why I was wrong at the end of the last comment when I said “Vaidehi is ruled out” !

One of the great classical composition by Raja “Vaidehi Raman” from Pagal Nilavu. While this is based on the Kalyani Raaga, the maestro made his mark in the Swara Jati you have given by introducing Shruti Bedham in an extraordinary way and brought other ragas like Hindolam to the fore. A great composition indeed.

In the GA-IR thread, I’ve hosted the pagal nilavu numbers, including vaidhEki!
Also, the vinyl cover got posted in the vinyl thread!
In addition, I mentioned pagal nilavu (the first MR movie that came out during VM’s peak) NOT having VM in the VM thread:)
Actually, among all the IR-MR combo songs, ‘nAn pAdum mouna rAgam’ is the only song written by VM 🙂

Salangai, bells, followed by, you expect a mridangam or a solo violin or may be a tabla. But what follows is a brilliant orchestral violin crescendo. And before we finish admiring it, he throws in a mridangam solo. Unbelievable kannapinna brilliance. These kind of surprises and seamlessly blending genres / instruments, only Raaja fossible.

Very easy one today. Wow! beautiful and milestone song from Maestro. Song filled with energy. It has so many raagams in it starting with Kalyaani. Maestro employs CCM’s powerful concept called Graha bEdham (shifting the source note by one). He has done not just in this song, in many other songs too. Not many does all these hard experiments in CCM concerts leave alone in film context. One of the best rendition by SJ when it comes to the mood, but I also hear few minor slips in sruthi which is so surprising coming from her.
Watching the video is a nightmare, with not even a hint of ‘naLinam’ in Radhika’s dance. Masculine dance only to curse such a fabulous composition.

One of the spellbinding experiments of Raja with Ragamalika. The pinnacle of them being ’என்ன சமையலோ’ (உன்னால் முடியும் தம்பி) alias சமையல் பாடமே (மணிப்பூர் மாமியார்). 🙂
