Wow! One of my all time fav songs

I was a die hard Rahman fan during its release but still I liked the song even then.
Prabhu had given a tribute to his father’s movie pattikkAdA paataNama by having a similar kudumi in the movie 🙂

It’s Intha Maamanodu Manasu from the film Uththama Raasa. Love how Raja sir has managed to convey total happiness through Janaki ma’s lines and total sadness through SPB sir’s voice at the both time in the same song! Too clever! 🙂

Great observation Rex on the Santoor part. As you said, it is very difficult to keep santoor down, because of the nature of the instrument itself.
//இதை கேட்டாலே, பசும் புள்வெளிகளில் நம் மனம் அலைபாயத் தொடங்கிவிடும்.//
Exactly, nothing more to add. It is amazing how Maestro brings such a scenario in front of us. It is not just in this composition, every one of them, we would be drawn into unique metaphors every time. Main reason being the way he tunes the song, the way he selects to play the instruments, and the way they are being played.
This song is a wonder. This song is unique in many aspects but one aspect which caught my eye (ears) is, it is not a perfect “happy” duet. These are the kind of situations which we don’t hear nowadays. First of all many of today’s songs don’t fit into the movie or vice versa. Those days they made some crappy movies, accepted, but at-least the situations were quite unique, that’s why we keep hearing these beauties, and we need Maestro to honor them.
Here, both of them love each other, but some how hero is not in a happy mood (for whatever reason, I have not seen the film), while the heroine is very happy. Hero does not show to her directly, but the lyrics, singing and the orchestration clearly shows us.
What a brilliant start to this song! I love the way SPB starts the charanam. ‘AkkaaLin magaLukku kEttathai naan koduppEn…’ Aha! what a sweet tune, but there is hint of soberness in SPB’s singing. It is totally different from pallavi. The way it starts and carries forward is something very very soothing. As the lyrics exhibits the sweetness already, SPB sing this very very sweet exactly how the lover’s heart goes out to his lover. SPB is SPB. Wow! Compare this to how SJ starts the second charanam. There will be lot of happiness in her rendering. See the contrast in singing! Do we have any singers like this today? Another brilliant part is the interludes are somewhat sober compared to the rest of the song, as he goes back in time and longs for those good times. See how Maestro nailed it!.
Another stunning highlight is how the song is structured and tuned. Same tune, but it should convey different emotions. Just lyrics won’t help. He cannot go very slow, it will become a sad song, it cannot be too fast, as it is not a complete happy song, hence it is at a middle level. Maestro has to bring in the happiness and sober in the same tune (in the same song, no two versions). Has he done it? Please hear SPB’s lines and SJ’s lines closely, two contrasting emotions, it will tell stories of ingenuity. Again, unless the tune is composed in such a fashion, whatever you sing will go to drain.
Rex brought up an important question of why Santoor is played down. Whenever we we hear Santoor, it brings joy and freshness. By keeping it down, Maestro is subtly implying that hero’s emotions are played down. Without reasons Maestro never ever plays any instrument. As SPB recently mentioned, the tone, volume of the instruments are all his ideas, (with reasons). Compositions like these are an asset to music. Towering innovation!.

Hello Vijay, thank you so much for such a detailed, comprehensive explanation. You made my write-up complete. I did not explain about the difficulty in composing a song that must have both pathos and joyful elements as part of the duet. As you said, such challenging situations aren’t common these days.
